No. 10 La Habra overwhelms El Dorado September 03, 2011 12:29 AM By JOSH DIGGS SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM PLACENTIA - La Habra quickly quelled any doubts as to whether its offense would be strong enough on its quest to an Orange County record five consecutive CIF titles. The No. 10 Highlanders scored early and often, overwhelming El Dorado, 55-27, in the nonleague opener for each team at Valencia High on Friday. Brett Bartolone rushed for 85 yards and three scores and quarterback Cole Wolterman passed for two touchdowns as the Highlanders scored on all but one of their first half possessions. “We had a great week of practice and it’s nice to come in here and execute offensively and defensively,” Bartolone said. “We ran with a lot of confidence and (Wolterman) settled in nicely.” Wolterman shrugged off an early interception to lead two pass-heavy scoring drives in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 35-7 with 3:10 left in the first half. El Dorado quarterback Travis Avila struggled early but led a pair of second-quarter drives, capping each with a 2-yard run on a keepers. Sean Wale made both of his field goal attempts including a 38-yarder with 2.3 seconds left in the half and a 52-yard laser in the third quarter.

In this nonleague matchup, Fullerton (2-1) came in undefeated but went down early. The Golden Hawks (1-2) handed the ball off to running back Hayden Dunn who was able to pound the ball down Fullerton’s defense most of the night.

Dunn, El Dorado run past crosstown rival Valencia September 24, 2011 1:20 AM By LOU PONSI OCVARSITY.COM PLACENTIA - El Dorado running back Hayden Dunn and a solid offensive line were two huge reasons the Golden Hawks were able to come away with a 38-22 victory over crosstown rival Valencia in a non-league contest Friday at Valencia High. The Golden Hawks (2-2) won back the coveted bell from the Tigers (0-4) in a rivalry that goes back 40 years. "It's a big game for the community and a big game for the kids," El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. Dunn rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries and scored a clutch touchdown on a 55-yard punt return in the fourth quarter to lift the Hawks' lead to two touchdowns with 3:15 left in the game.

Brea Olinda rushing attack too much for El Dorado September 30, 2011 11:11 PM BY LOU PONSI OCVARSITY.COM PLACENTIA -- Brea Olinda’s high-powered running game proved a bit overwhelming for host El Dorado in the Century League opener for both teams Friday night at Valencia High. All five of the Wildcats’ touchdowns came on the ground in a 33-14 victory over the Golden Hawks (2-3, 0-1). Josh Vizcaya led the attack with 144 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, and Jordan Brown ran for 109 yards and a touchdown on four carries. The offensive line for Brea Olinda (5-0, 1-0) opened up holes for Vizcaya, but the junior running back also powered his way through tacklers to pick up extra yards. “It’s all preparation,” Brea Olinda coach Robb Perrance said. “It’s what we’ve been talking about since last November. The Golden Hawks drove from their own 20 to the Brea Olinda 18 on the first series, but came up empty when Dillon Lawson’s 35-yard field goal try was blocked. The Wildcats took over on their own 13 and wound up scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run from Vizcaya to take a 7-0 first quarter lead. A 31-yard run from Brown two plays earlier helped set up the score. The Golden Hawks tied the score in the second quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Travis Avila to Michael Covelli. The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter and with the score tied at 14 heading into the fourth, the Wildcats took over. An interception by Jared Liggins — his second of the game — gave the Wildcats possession on the El Dorado 13. Vizcaya carried three times on the drive, including a 5-yard TD run that put Brea Olinda ahead, 20-14. On the Golden Hawks’ next possession, a bad snap on a punt attempt deep in their own territory resulted in another short field for the Wildcats. Once again, it was Brown who capped the two-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown to put the contest away. Avila completed 24 of 33 passes for 207 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown.

Avila gets El Dorado past winless Canyon October 07, 2011 11:24 PM BY JASON EICHELBERGER OCVARSITY.COM ORANGE -- Quarterback Travis Avila completed 18 of 22 passes for 273 yards and two scores, as El Dorado knocked off Canyon, 27-17, in a Century League game on Friday at El Modena. The Comanches (0-6, 0-2) took a 3-0 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter as senior running back Skylee Sheard gained 42 yards on the ground to spearhead the game’s opening drive that ended with a 32-yard field goal by junior Marshel Gleason. El Dorado (3-3, 1-1) took a 7-3 lead just under the 10-minute mark of the second quarter, as a nine-play, 68-yard drive ended with Avila hitting a wide-open Paul Robertson in the right corner of the end zone. The Golden Hawks special teams set up their second touchdown, as sophomore Mark Parsons blocked a Comanches punt that was recovered by junior Kyle Eckart at the Canyon 20-yard line. Four plays later, Avila connected on a slant pass to senior wide receiver Michael Covelli from 4 yards out to give El Dorado a 14-3 lead. Avila, who completed 8 of 9 passes for 120 yards in the first half, then drove the Golden Hawks inside the Canyon 5-yard line on its final possession of the half before a 20-yard field goal by Dillon Lawson gave El Dorado a 17-3 lead. El Dorado increased the lead four minutes into the second half when senior linebacker Camron Fairfield stepped in front of a pass thrown by Comanches quarterback Corey Elsasser and returned it 32 yards for the touchdown to make it 24-3. Canyon cut the lead to 24-10 on its next possession, as Sheard weaved his way through the Golden Hawks defense on a 29-yard touchdown run. It was the team’s first touchdown since a September 10th game against Laguna Hills. Sheard finished the contest with 167 yards on 27 carries. Lawson pushed El Dorado’s lead to 27-10 with 9:52 remaining when he booted a 38-yard field. Canyon trimmed the deficit to 27-17 on a seven-yard touchdown run by junior Rob MallenWest with 2:28 remaining, but the Golden Hawks recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory. “We played and fought hard,” said Comanches assistant coach Chris Anderson. “We’re going to continue talking to the kids about getting better and making no excuses.” Anderson is filling in for Canyon head coach Brent McKee, who had surgery Thursday to remove a kidney that doctors feared had a cancerous growth inside it. Anderson confirmed that the surgery last a couple of hours and that the plan is for McKee to be discharged from the hospital on Sunday.

Esperanza pounds El Dorado October 14, 2011 11:37 PM By ERIC PATTEN SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM PLACENTIA- On a night when Esperanza needed it the most, they were almost perfect. The Aztecs had eight drives, not including two possessions that ended with quarterback Mark Tumlinson taking a knee, and scored points on seven of them to upend host El Dorado, 39-27, in Friday night’s Century League game at Valencia High. “That’s a huge win for us,” Esperanza coach Greg Kemp said as his team snapped a two-game league losing streak. “It was a must win if we want to stay in the hunt for the playoffs.” Running back Troy Poole, who touched the ball on 31 of his team’s 52 plays, rushed for 184 yards and three TDs to lead the way for the Aztecs (4-3, 1-2). Esperanza finished with 392 yards of total offense. Poole pounded the Golden Hawks (3-4,1-2) inside, consistently gaining 1 or 2 yards after contact. But it was a trick play in the second quarter that helped spark the Aztecs. With the score tied, 6-6, the Aztecs were saddled with a first-and-20 when the junior running back took a wrap-around handoff from Tumlinson and bolted 37 yards for Esperanza’s first lead. The play seemed to catch El Dorado off guard as Tumlinson sold the pass before slipping the ball into Poole’s belly. “Oh man, that’s my favorite play,” Poole said. “I had a couple of defensive players run right past me because they thought the quarterback still had the ball.” After El Dorado opened the second half with a failed onside kick, Poole took an option pitch from Tumlinson, reversed his field and threw a pass to receiver Kevin Viers for a 43-yard gain. That catch and run set up Poole’s second touchdown, a 2-yard jaunt, and gave Esperanza a 27-14 lead with 11:12 to go in the quarter. El Dorado responded with a 17-play drive that spanned 6:54. Hayden Dunn had one of several key runs on the possession with a 36-yard gain on a delayed handoff. And quarterback Travis Avila capped the 63-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Covelli. Yet Esperanza put together its own lengthy drive, using a mix of short passes to Nick Catalano and runs by Poole. After marching 80 yards, Tumlinson found Nate Rodriguez for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Tumlinson was quietly effective, completing 10 of 14 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. On the next possession Avila was halted on a fourth-and-3 play deep in Esperanza territory and it appeared the Aztecs would coast to their first victory in three games. However, the El Dorado defense forced a three-and-out; the only blemish on speranza's drive-chart. Dunn fielded a punt at the 47, found a crease and raced to his second return touchdown of the season, cutting the score to 33-27. Esperanza’s offensive efficiency reemerged after a 48-yard kick return by Poole, setting up his 19-yard touchdown run five plays later for the game’s final score.

Richardson leads way for El Modena October 21, 2011 11:27 PM By ANTHONY MENDOZA OCVARSITY.COM ORANGE - El Modena quarterback James Richardson rushed for 105 yards, including a key 30-yard gain on third down with 2:30 remaining in the game, as the Vanguards picked up their first Century League victory, 34-31, against El Dorado on Friday night at El Modena High. The Vanguards (1-2, 3-4) took a 7-0 lead to start the game but trailed in the fourth quarter. El Modena took control of the game for good with 10:36 remaining as Richardson scrambled in from 11 yards out to give the Vanguards a 27-24 edge. El Modena extended its lead on its next drive. The El Dorado center snapped the ball over the punter’s head to give the Vanguards the ball at the Golden Hawks 11-yard line. It didn’t take long for El Modena to take advantage as Taalib Childs scored to give the Vanguards a two-score lead. That score proved to be the difference as El Dorado (1-3, 2-5) drove down the field and scored on quarterback Travis Avila’s sneak from 1 yard out to pull the Golden Hawks to three points behind with less than five minutes remaining in the game. El Dorado had one last chance to win the game after getting the ball back with less than 10 seconds remaining, but Avila was sacked at his own 42-yard to end the game. The loss all but eliminates the Golden Hawks from postseason play. After getting the ball at the El Dorado 28-yard line after an 8-yard punt out of bounds, the Vanguards struck first as Richardson ran the ball in from 7 yards out. The Golden Hawks went 80 yards in two minutes capping the drive on a pass to Hayden Dunn to tie the score.

Pacifica-El Dorado recap September 10, 2010 11:17 PM By LAURENS ONG SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM GARDEN GROVE - Cody Johnson scored a 26-yard touchdown with 1:28 left in the game Friday to boost Pacifica to a 28-24 comeback victory against El Dorado at Bolsa Grande High. With 1:42 left in the game, Pacifica quarterback Mario Nava’s pass was deflected on a third-and-8 at the 41 yard line, but a facemask penalty on El Dorado (0-1) gave Pacifica (2-0) a new set of downs at the 26yard line.

Non League Game. FULLERTON - One of the keys to beating Fullerton this season is slowing down quarterback Anthony Martinez. But as El Dorado found out Friday, that’s far from an easy task. Martinez, a senior, completed 14 of 21 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns as the Indians defeated the Golden Hawks, 30-15, in a non league game at Fullerton District Stadium. “He’s getting better, isn’t he,” Fullerton coach Julian Smilowitz said of Martinez’s performance. “(We use him) in every way we can.” Martinez didn’t have a favorite target but instead, completed passes to eight different receivers, with no receiver having more than three receptions.

Non League. Victory Bell Game. PLACENTIA - Valencia and El Dorado squared off in the 39th “Battle for the Bell” game in the two schools’ storied history Friday night. Valencia took home the bell behind the power running of Omar Perez and the accuracy of quarterback Robert Mata for a 23-10 victory. Valencia now holds the all time edge over El Dorado, 20-19. El Dorado jumped to an early lead thanks to a 56-yard run by Aleks Tayek that was set up a 33-yard field goal by Ian Miller. Valencia responded in the second quarter behind the stellar play of Mata, who went 10-for-10 passing for 102 yards. Perez carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards and a TD. The Tigers picked up where they left off in the beginning of the third quarter. Mata hit Mac Langenwalter for a 26-yard pass that set up a 26-yard field goal by Caleb Carreno. Gabriel Perez added a 3-yard TD plunge at the end of the third quarter to give the Tigers a 16-3 lead. The Golden Hawks clawed right back thanks to a 32-yard catch by JD Blackamore and an impressive fourth down conversion from QB Andreas Ambuehl who burst through the middle for a 29 yard gain. He later dove into the endzone for the one-yard TD. The Tigers’ offense was too much in the second half with Mata continuing to air it out with the pass. His 71-yard connection to Langenwalter in the 4th quarter sealed the victory for Valencia. Langenwalter finished the game with six catches for 128 yards and a TD. Omar Perez finished the game for the Tigers with 30 carries, 100 yards, and a TD on the ground. Mata went 14-for-16, for 209 yards and a TD.

Non League Game. LA VERNE - El Dorado dropped its fourth consecutive game, 27-7, to Damien of La Verne on Friday night at Damien High. The Golden Hawks (0-4) ran a balanced offensive attack early in the game and seemed to be able to defend Damien’s offense. But El Dorado was not able to capitalize on multiple mistakes by the Spartans (3-1). Damien did not make the same mistake. The Spartans were able to convert two turnovers by the Golden Hawks into touchdowns. The lone offensive highlight for El Dorado came early in the second quarter when the Golden Hawks capped a 65-yard drive with a 3-yard run from Jordan Long. Soon after, Long was injured. He did not return to the game, and the El Dorado offense, which had hoped to hit its stride, was slowed once again. El Dorado will look for its first victory of the season next Friday at Brea Olinda.

League Game. BREA - El Dorado defeated Brea Olinda, 25-24, for its first victory of the season in a Century League game Friday night at Brea Olinda High. The Golden Hawks (1-4, 1-0) scored and completed a 2-point conversion with 42 seconds left in the game to capture the victory. “Our guys have stayed hungry,” El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. “This week we had fewer mental mistakes, and when we did make those kinds of mistakes, we were able to bounce back from them. El Dorado had a balanced offensive attack, led by quarterback Adreas Ambuehl and running back Aleks Tayek. Tayek ran for 146 yards while Ambuehl threw for an additional 136 yards. Tayek got his big chance because Jordan Long was injured last week. The coaching staff expects to have both Tayek and Long healthy next week. Brea Olinda (1-5, 1-1) also came out strong on offense with Josh Vizcaya rushing for 130 yards. The Wildcats seemed to be in control early but did not have a large enough lead to hold off the Golden Hawks’ late effort. El Dorado returns home to play Canyon next week, while Brea Olinda has a bye.

League Game. Pop Warner Night. PLACENTIA – Canyon’s Beau Perry missed most of his team’s first four games with a knee injury. On Thursday night he made up for lost time. The senior quarterback threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns as the Comanches routed El Dorado, 47-24, in a Century League game at Valencia High. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for Canyon (2-5, 1-2). "It was a great performance" Coach Brent McKee said. "What you don't see in the box score is what a leader he (Perry) is". Perry completed 17 of 21 passes, including 11 in a row in the first half, and his four touchdowns tied a school record. Marcus Sanchez caught eight passes for for 181 yards and three scores. Jordan Long rushed for a season-high 226 yards with one touchdown on 20 carries for the Golden Hawks (1-5, 1-1).

League Game. PLACENTIA – Jordan Long rushed for 181 yards and a touchdown and Ian Miller kicked three field goals and intercepted a pass late in the game as El Dorado held on to defeat Esperanza, 16-14, in a Century League game Friday night at Valencia High. The Golden Hawks’ (2-5, 2-1) win snaps a 13-game losing streak to the Aztecs dating back to 1983. "I kept thinking 'I've got to get the ball,' " said Miller, who intercepted Austin Steele's pass at the Golden hawk 25-yard line with less than 30 seconds to play to seal the victory. "This was a great team effort and win for us." Leading 16-14 with 1:29 to play, the Golden Hawks(2-5, 2-1) fumbled the ball away at the Aztecs 13-yard line. Desperately trying to get his team into a position for a potential winning field goal, Steele quickly guided his team to the El Dorado 35-yard line. However, Miller jumped and deflected Steele's pass away from an Aztecs receiver and pulled it in to secure the victory. "Every week is a punchout, drag-out game in the Century League, " El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. Miller kicked two field goals in the first half, but Steele's TD pass to Kevin Viers gave Esperanza (3-5, 1-3) a 7-6 halftime lead.

League Game. Homecoming. PLACENTIA – El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs walked to the sideline, put his head down, and exhaled. His team had just survived another knock-down, drag ‘em out Century League football game. Jordan Long’s 24-yard touchdown run with 5:59 left lifted El Dorado over El Modena, 20-17, in a slugfest on Friday at Valencia High. The Golden Hawks (3-5, 3-1), who overcame an early 17-0 deficit, moved into a tie for second place in league with Villa Park and will play the Spartans next Friday. The Vanguards (2-6, 0-4) will play Brea next Friday. "Just another Century League game," Racobs said. "Everyone is capable of beating you each week. The game turned when El Dorado faked a punt on fourth-and 2 at its 37 and Michael Bucaro's 13-yard run gave the Golden Hawks new life. J.D. Blackamore's 21-yard scoring catch six plays later made it a 17-7 game. Two second-half field goals by Ian Miller pulled El Dorado to 17-13.

League Game. Senior Night.PLACENTIA – Villa Park held off El Dorado, 17-16, on Friday night at Valencia High to tie Foothill for first place in the Century League. El Dorado trailed, 17-10, with 2:28 left, but the Golden Hawks drove 70 yards and quarterback Andreas Ambuehl found receiver JD Blackamore for a 32-yard touchdown. On the point-after attempt, the holder misplayed the snap, and the Spartans defense recovered the ball with 1:25 left and the deciding one-point lead. A big turning point came in the second quarter with the score tied, 3-3. On second-and-goal on the 2-yard line, the Spartans fumbled a handoff attempt, and the Golden Hawks recovered on their own 3-yard line. El Dorado then drove the ball 97 yards and scored on the first touchdown by Ambuehl and Blackamore for a 10-3 lead with 46 seconds left in the half. Villa Park needed just three plays in the second half's opening possession to tie it, when junior Nick Privatelli running 16 yards for the score. Tafuna then put the Spartans up for good with a two yard run in the fourth quarter. The Spartans (6-3, 4-1) hold a one-game lead over Foothill in their overall record, their only league loss coming against the Knights last week at home.

League Game. TUSTIN - El Dorado made things interesting in the Century League with a 31-21 victory over Foothill on Thursday at Tustin High. El Dorado (4-6, 4-2) and Foothill (5-5, 4-2) are tied for second place, and if Brea Olinda defeats first-place Villa Park on Friday night, the Spartans, Wildcats, Golden Hawks and Knights would finish with 4-2 league marks. The Century League receives four automatic bids for the postseason. "It's a great win to take into the playoffs," El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. Jordan Long rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries, which helped eat up large chunks of time, especially in the fourth quarter with the Golden Hawks clinging to a slim lead. "I've got to hand it to the offensive line," Racobs said. "They just dug down deep and fought." El Dorado also converted two Foothill fumbles into touchdowns. With the score tied at 7, the Knights fumbled the ball away on their own 25 three plays into the third quarter. Long carried five times in a row on the Hawks' ensuing drive, the last time running for a 10-yard touchdown. The Knights fumbled the ball away again on their next possession and once again, the Hawks converted the miscue into a score, this time on a 9 yard run from Long. Foothill quarterback Josh Peterman completed 13 of 27 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns.

CIF Playoffs - Round 1 LA HABRA - Cody Clements threw a career-high five touchdown passes, and Drake Griffin rushed for 241 yards and scored four touchdowns as La Habra breezed to a 56-28 victory over El Dorado in the first round of the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs at La.Habra High on Friday. Clements guided the Highlanders to seven touchdowns in nine first-half possessions, as La Habra’s offensive was virtually unstoppable. The Highlanders, the three-time defending CIF champions, advance to the second round and will face Cypress. “We had a great week of practice leading up to this game,” said Clements, who has passed for 25 TDs this season with only one interception. “Our offensive line, receivers and running backs were incredible.” “We executed well tonight,” said La Habra coach Frank Mazotta. “This was our first game all season where we had all 11 starters healthy and playing.” On La Habra’s first possession, Clements marched the Highlanders (8-3) 63 yards in five plays to give La Habra an early 7-0 lead. Clements capped the drive with a 29-yard TD pass to Ahmad Avery. Four plays following a foiled fake punt attempt by the Golden Hawks, Griffin scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. El Dorado (4-7) countered with a 48-yard TD run by Jordan Long to cut the score to 14-7 midway through the first quarter. Griffin scored his second TD of the game on a 33-yard run and then caught a 46-yard TD pass from Clements igniting La Habra to a 28-7 lead after the first quarter. Jordan Salo caught TD passes of 1 and 27 yards from Clements in the second quarter and Griffin scored his fourth TD on a 63-yard run. Salo also caught a TD pass from Clements in the third.

Non League Game. LAS FLORES - After opening the season with two losses, the Tesoro football coaching staff went back to basics. "In the first week, a lot of guys still thought this was last year's team and, to be honest, even some of the coaches," Tesoro coach Brian Barnes said. "After that first week (13-10 loss to Mission Hills), we decided that we were going back to Tesoro football." The results are showing as Tesoro (3-2) recorded its third consecutive victory, defeating El Dorado, 21-7, in a home nonleague victory Friday night. El Dorado fell to 2-1-1. "We had to find our identity," Barnes said. "Tesoro football" starts with the offensive line. Last year's group was one of the key reasons for the successful season. Sil Ajawara is the only returning starter. "After last season, people thought we were going to lose to a lot, but the big boys up front (Ajawara, Chase Richardson, Mike Zangl, Curtis Greer and Alton Moore) are taking care of us," Mason said. Trevor Weis (68 yards) and Zach Mitchell (67) led the ground attack. Quarterback Brett Mason completed 12 of 20 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Mason threw one interception, which El Dorado turned into points when quarterback Andreas Ambuehl scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter. Dillon Kaller intercepted the pass. "Each week, he's coming into his own more and more," Barnes said of Mason. "The (defensive) end dropped into coverage and he didn't see him. It happens, but the rest of the game he played great." Tesoro tied the score with 7:50 remaining in the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Mason to Cody Wittick. The Titans added another score two minutes later when Weis raced 46 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 halftime lead. "We wanted to pound the ball and put the game on our offensive line," Mason said. "It was up front, where we won it." Mason connected with Wittick again in third quarter, this time a 6-yard touchdown as the Titans took a 21-7 lead. The rest of the evening was then turned over the defense. El Dorado failed to score on its five second-half possessions. Mitchell ended one with an interception. The Titans held El Dorado running Brock Dunn to 40 yards rushing. He entered the game averaging 143 yards a game. "The defense has played well all year," Barnes said. "Our goal was to stop Dunn and we knew that if we could stop the run, we would have a good shot to win and they played great." Tesoro heads into its bye week and will return to action Oct. 16 against Dana Hills in the South Coast League opener. El Dorado has another nonleague game remaining, next week against Glendora. The Golden Hawks will open league play Oct. 15 against El Modena. "I liked the way the kids fought tonight," El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. "They fought tooth and nail on every down against a good football team. We came up a little short, but I think we can use this as a tool to help us get ready for (Century) league."

League Game. ORANGE — Following consecutive losses to close out its nonleague season, El Dorado entered Thursday night’s Century League opener on a mission to remove the sour taste of defeat. Behind running back Brock Dunn’s 134 yards rushing and three touchdowns, the Golden Hawks opened league with a 44-0 victory over host El Modena. El Dorado (3-2-1, 1-0) set a physical tone early, opening the game with a five-play, 63-yard drive that featured only runs. Dunn capped the drive, taking a sweep 39 yards to give the Golden Hawks a 7-0 lead. El Dorado added another score with 4:38 left in the first quarter on Dunn’s 81-yard TD plunge that wrapped up an eight-play, 27-yard drive. The Golden Hawks scored on their first four possessions of the first half, taking over in Vanguards territory twice. Leading 21-0 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter, a fumble recovery on the El Modena 25 gave the Golden Hawks an opportunity to put the game out of reach early. Dunn scored the last of his three touchdowns on a 15-yard run through the heart of the El Modena defense, making the score 28-0. The Vanguards (2-4, 0-1) were held to 56 yards of offense in the first half. El Modena running back Ryan Arballo carried 27 times for 116 yards.

League Game. Senior Night. PLACENTIA — After controlling the first half of its game against Villa Park, El Dorado fell flat in the third quarter. But big plays helped the Golden Hawks soar past the Spartans in a key Century League game on Friday night at Valencia High. Garret Dressel and Brock Dunn connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass. Dunn clinched El Dorado's 24-7 victory when he went 56 yards for a touchdown on a draw play. The victory lifted El Dorado (5-2-1, 3-0) into a tie for the league lead with Tustin. The teams will play each other next Friday with the winner clinching a playoff berth. Villa Park (5-3, 1-2), still fighting for a playoff spot, will play Canyon (4-4, 2-1) on Thursday "It's a great victory for our squad," El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said. "We played outstanding (up front)." The Golden Hawks outgained the Spartans, 247 to 29, in the first half yet led only 9-0 thanks to two costly turnovers in the Villa Park end zone. The Spartans took the momentum in the third quarter, scoring on David Tafuna's 1-yard run, and were driving at the El Dorado 33 with three minutes left in the quarter. But a penalty and two incompletions led to a punt, and just like that, momentum changed jerseys. Dressel's 69-yard TD catch lifted El Dorado to a 15-7 lead. An intentional grounding call in the end zone gave the Golden Hawks a safety. After a punt early in the fourth quarter, Dunn took the handoff, slipped a tackle, and sprinted down the middle of the field untouched to paydirt. "We self-destructed," Villa Park coach Dusan Ancich said. "We talk a lot about playing consistent football, but we're still waiting to see that. We're better than what we showed tonight, but we have got to compete every week."

League Game. ORANGE Two big passing plays by El Dorado were the difference in a 20-0 victory over Canyon in a Century League showdown game Friday night at Kelly Stadium. The backbreaker was a 66-yard strike down El Dorado's sideline from quarterback Andres Ambuehl to Garret Dressel. The senior receiver broke a tackle, put a quick move on another defender and was finally downed at the Comanches 1-yard line. On the next play, Ambuehl punched it in for a 1-yard touchdown run and the 20-0 lead with 28 seconds left in the third. "Garret made a great play," Ambuehl said. "He got open, broke a tackle and made the play. When that happens, it's easy." The victory by El Dorado (6-3-1, 4-1) gave it the No. 2 seed in the league going into the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs. El Dorado scored its first touchdown following a 21-yard pass to Jeff Blackamore to the Comanches 13. Three plays later, Ambuehl scored on a 2-yard dive to extend his team's lead to 13-0. The loss knocked Canyon (4-6, 2-3) out of postseason play and ended its season.
